Three arrested
for killing AMU student
WSN Network
Kanpur: Three youths while trying to loot a mobile set had allegedly
killed Aligarh Muslim University student Mazhar Nayeem on September
16. The Aligarh police and the Meerut unit of the Special Task Force
on Sunday claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of the
three youths for killing the BSc second-year student. A country-made
gun, motorcycle (UP81K-4583) and the looted mobile set were
recovered from their possession.
A resident of
Mumtaz House, Aftab Hall of AMU, Nayeem’s murder rocked the campus
when students had gone on rampage, burning houses of the
vice-chancellor and the proctor, forcing authorities to close the
university sine die and asking students to vacate hostels. The three
have been identified as Ashraf, Sadique and Tariq, all residents of
Lane No 12, Jeevangarh locality, which is notorious for the presence
of anti-social elements. Ashraf is a drug addict, cops said. Nayeem
was going to Shamshad Market on a bicycle to get his mobile
recharged and was stopped near the hockey ground by three
motorcycle-borne miscreants, police said. ‘‘When they tried to
snatch his mobile, Nayeem shouted for help. Ashraf then took out a
country-made gun and hit Nayeem with its butt. But the gun went off,
injuring Nayeem,’’ said Ashok Kumar Raghav of STF, Meerut.
According to him,
the three accused have revealed that they wanted to snatch the
mobile set. ‘‘They (accused) claim that they came to know about
Nayeem’s death after reading newspapers next day,’’ Raghav said.
Soon after the
incident, the number of the snatched mobile handset was put on
surveillance, he said, adding that the accused changed the SIM card
later. ‘‘Later, it could be traced through its IMEI (International
Mobile Equipment Identity) number.”
