Sikhs targeted
in hate crime, complaint lodged
WSN Network
Chandigarh: Sikh-American legal defense and education fund (SALDEF)
has filed a formal complaint with the federal bureau of
investigation (FBI) and Montgomery County police department about an
alleged hate crime in Burtonsville, Maryland, a suburb of
Washington, DC.
The incident
reportedly occurred on Saturday, when two Sikh-American men taking
an afternoon walk near their house were attacked by a group of six
young men. One of the victims received such a bad blow on the face
that he fell on the ground, partially losing consciousness. When the
other Sikh man tried calling the police, his cellphone was snatched
and he too, was beaten up. The attackers continued to assault them
before fleeing the scene. As no valuables were taken from the
victims, the attack was said to be ‘racially and religiously
motivated’.
“Such attacks
create an environment of fear, not only for Maryland residents but
all minorities across the country,” said SALDEF associate director
Rajbir S Datta. “Unfortunately, the incident, which took place four
days after the sixth anniversary of 9/11, is a sad reminder of how
we were targeted when World Trade Centre was attacked,’’ added Datta.
