Caught in the
crossfire: 5800 students!
The bloody power turf clash has also caught in the cross fire the
fate of many students of the 23-year-old Budha Dal Public School
which has two branches in Patiala and Samana run by the samparday.
The schools are also part of the turf battle, but the situation is
giving sleepless nights to the 5,800 students, their parents and
guradians and the teachers working in the two branches.
Incidentally, the school has recently claimed media headlines for
the right reasons when its students successfully competed in a NASA
contest. Even though Amrit Aujla, principal of the Patiala branch,
said things would be normal very soon, even Baba Balbir Singh, the
nominated successor to Santa Singh, admits that "the incident has
brought a bad name to the school."
Balbir Singh's father, two brothers and a nephew were killed in the
attack while Uday Singh, president of the Sikh Educational Society
that runs the school, is now booked for murder. That is about how
normal things are.
Principal Aujla himself has been accused by the Balbir Singh group
of helping Uday Singh and his family escape after the killings in a
school car. But the fate of the parents is unenviable. A mother said
she thought that it was the best school in the region, "and I put
both my children here. But last week's incident is cause for worry."
