Mumbai still under siege
WSN Network
MUMBAI:
More than twenty four hours since the city was attacked in one of
the worst violent incidents this country has seen, the fires at the
prestigious heritage hotel, Taj Intercontinental, the Trident Oberoi
and the Nariman Bhavan, still continue amidst reports that there is
a hostage situation in both the hotels.
Relatives and
diplomats from various countries, including scores of media
personnel are waiting with fingers crossed outside the hotels hoping
against hope that there are no more casualties and the full force of
the Indian security forces –the National Security Guards, the
Commandoes, the marine commandoes, the Rapd Action Force, the army,
navy and the air force are able to protect the lives of those still
stuck in the hotels. The brunt of the AK-47, grenade bomb attack
has been borne by senior and junior officers of the Mumbai police
which has lost more than 12 officers during the combing and combat
operations since the last 24 hours.
While a large
number of people have been evacuated from the hotels, Mumbai and the
rest of the country continues to be glued onto TV channels to obtain
a minute to minute reporting of the emerging scenario at the two
places.
The busiest
financial district of the country at Mumbai, including the Mumbai
Stock Exchange remained closed and did not transact any business.
Till last
reports, more than a hundred people have been reported to have been
killed, including nationals from
Israel, USA, UK,
Brazil and Australia. Hundreds have been injured and are
recuperating and fighting for life in various hospitals,
particularly JJ Hospital.
While only one
person has been arrested alive, six attackers have been killed so
far.
