Bitterness mars grassroot
politics in Punjab
WSN Network
JALANDHAR: Grass
root level politics in
Punjab
is becoming bitter by the day and the elections to various local
bodies keep underlining this unsavoury development all the time.
Senior leaders get deeply involved in what was a local affair a few
years back. Now, MP Rana Gurjit Singh has accused brother-in-law of
Sukhbir Singh Badal and Punjab Public Relations Minister Bikram
Singh Majithia of terrorising Congress councillors of Jandiala Guru
Municipal Council to facilitate installation of Shiromani Akali
Dalled office-bearers despite being in minority .
“Majithia and
SAD MLA from Jandiala Guru Malkiat Singh are openly threatening
Congress councillors to either support Akali candidates or face
false cases. In fact, the local police have already booked two and
one of them has already run away from home fearing arrest. This is
sheer rule of the jungle,” Rana Gurjit said.
Nine of the 15
councillors were supporting Tejinder Singh Happy for president, much
to the dislike of Malkiat and Majithia. Sources said since SAD
members are in minority, it seems Akalis were behind the police
cases against Sukhchain Singh Pehalwan and Ravinder Singh Kukku in
order to prevent them from participating in the election process.
Such tactics have been used across Punjab.
BJP President
Rajinder Bhandari said on a TV discussion program 'Khabarsaar' this
week that Congress party had approached him to help in getting
elected Congressmen. "They offered to virtually buy Akali
councillors, but I resisted saying those who will spend money will
also make it the same way, and BJP cannot allow this," he said,
without commenting on saleable Akali or Congress councillors.
