Elvis Presley
In A Turban
It's going to be a rocking good Christmas if Swansea's very own
Singing Sikh has anything to do with it. Peter Singh is already
well-known to fans as the world's only Sikh Elvis Presley
impersonator.
His talents also extend to lyric-writing, with self-penned Bhindi
Bhaji Boogie and Turbans Over Memphis some of his crowd-pleasing
favourites.
But his latest production is a seasonal rocker which he hopes will
provide some good cheer to the yuletide festivities. It's called
Come on it's Christmas. Peter Singh has written it himself.
So if you have had enough of turkey this Christmas, now try
something with a curry flavour. The spice boy first became a fan of
Elvis after moving to Britain from India in the 1950s. For a while
he ran a take away in Waun Wen called Graceland, named after Elvis's
home and burial place where you'd have found on the menu a Love Me
Tender burger, a Burning Love Special curry and the set meal for
one, Are You Lonesome Tonight? But it was slipping into a white
sequinned jumpsuit that really made his name.
After the death of the King, much to the surprise of his extended
family, he began donning the rhinestone-studded white jump suit,
diamante-studded turban and a belt with a buckle the size of nan
bread. His new career as an Elvis impersonator was born.
Backed by his group The Poppadoms, he performed widely, and appeared
on television, belting out Elvis-inspired hits such as Who's Sari
Now? and My Poppadom Told Me.
Peter also answers to the name of Turbanator, calls Elvis "The King"
and explains himself pithily: "I am East meets West."
For Swansea, he is someone who is taking Swansea all over the world
with a song and a turban.
He had earlier paid a tribute to Elvis Presley to mark the 25th
anniversary of The King's death at the club in Swansea's High
Street.
