Upon completion of his preliminary studies, he joined the air force but after retiring while still in his youth, he served in the animal husbandry department. He was known for his diligence, honesty and efficiency. The then CM of Punjab, Pratap Singh Kairon, personally ensured that he was posted in Palampur, then part of Punjab, to oversee the special programs drafted by the department for that area.
