VFF, Sikh Students Association seminar underlines Sikh concerns
WSN Network

DALLAS: Voices for Freedom and Sikh Students Association of SM University held a seminar last week, in commemoration of the 25th year of genocide to highlight and remember the genocide perpetrated against the Sikhs in 1984. It was an effort to reminisce, reflect, recollect and ponder ways of moving forward. The seminar generated awareness about the atrocities committed against the Sikhs and shed light on
India’s abhorrent human rights record in relation to all minorities, namely Sikhs.

Dr. Rick Halperin, the director of The Human Rights Department at SMU and also the former Chair of the Board of Amnesty International USA commented on how India’s rating in Amnesty’s yearly review and its gross violations of human rights especially in the Punjab region has remained steady. He further stated that while there is a mechanism in the international criminal court (ICC) to try and hold criminals liable for crimes against humanity, but the wheels churn at a snail’s pace. He summed up by stating that violations of the rights of one human being inflict a great deal of damage and tarnish each and every one of our standings as a human being.

Dr. Amarjit Singh reflected on the 540 years history of the Sikh nation putting special emphasis on the heinous crimes perpetrated against the Sikhs by modern Indian state. He gave detailed account of the vile and Machiavellian scheming of the Indian leadership and how they betrayed and belittled the Sikhs at every instance. He further stated that this mental and emotional barrage emerged into a lethal wanton physical destruction that culminated in the assault on the  Harimandir Sahib in June 1984, the pogroms in 1984 and the calculated operations to eliminate Sikh youth throughout the decade that followed. He advocated that the permanent solution to the problem lies in having a plebiscite so that the Sikh people may themselves be able to choose their destiny as per United Nations Charter.

A lively question-answer session followed the presentations by the panelists.

Priyanka Kaur of the Sikh Students Association of SMU conducted the proceedings and asked for all to be aware and do spend time to unravel the cloak of deception on “mystic” India for what it really is.
