Punjab Wakf Board chairperson
steps down
WSN Network
Sangrur: Malerkotla MLA Razia Sultana has resigned as
chairperson of the Punjab Wakf board.
Her term otherwise was to expire in November 2010. The reason of
putting in her papers: To show the authorities that she is not
interested in working in adverse circumstances when she has been
honest all along.
Coming clean in a vigilance inquiry in the board working and
withdrawal of powers, Razia has tried to score a point by resigning,
she does not want to stay put if the government is not willing. She
has forwarded her resignation to the Punjab CM though she aspires to
remain member of the board. The probe forced her to take the
decision, claimed Razia. She said leave alone any scandal or
bungling, even no irregularity has been found in vigilance probe
declaring her clean and even then order for withdrawal of certain
powers followed by litigations forced her to come out of the mess,
she declared.
The two tenures of Razia as head of Wakf board had remained
embroiled in controversies, first because of the tiff with board CEO
and Punjab police ADGP Izhar Alam Khan and then complaints by some
prominent Muslims and board members. But she proved her supremacy
and got some facilities for poor Muslims using her clout as
chairperson.
Some SAD leaders are eyeing this prestigious post. A Congressman
said the resignation could be fallout of Razia’s sore relations with
new PPCC president Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. As Bhattal has got the
power, Razia too a powerful Congress leader might have found it wise
to resign and project her as a leader, who can sacrifice, but not
bow before opponents.
