Reference Library

AMRITSAR: A
five-member committee formed by Sikh bodies on the issue of the Sikh
Reference Library on Tuesday released its preliminary report,
claiming that the Army intentionally burnt the library and announced
a legal battle to restore it Releasing the report in a press
conference, committee members advocate D.S. Gill, former IAS officer
Gurtej Singh, Lt Gen Kartar Singh Gill, Gurpreet Singh and Amar
Singh Chahal rubbished the claims of Defence Minister A.K.Antony
that the Army had returned everything it had taken away.
“The Government
of India has taken contradictory positions on this issue as it first
claimed that everything was burnt in the fire that accidentally
raged in the library on June 6, 1984. Then it changed its statement,
saying the government took nothing on a case filed by Satnam Singh.
Subsequently,
Antony
is saying in Parliament that it returned everything it had taken
away,” they said. The panel members said they had collected evidence
that even though Operation Bluestar concluded on June 6 morning, the
Army burnt a part of the library on June 7 and took away the
remaining items.
Lashing out at
the SGPC, they said it had failed to pursue the case properly. “Even
some books and articles which then secretary of SGPC got back in
1984 from the Army have not been restored,” they said. The final
report will be out in two months, the panel said.
