Hundreds attend funeral of one of first Sikhs in Nottingham
WSN Network

LONDON: Hundreds attended the funeral of a prominent member of the Sikh community on Saturday.

Gurmej Singh Mahal, 81, died at home in Mapperley Park in the early hours of September 14, after suffering from a form of Parkinson's called PSP.

As one of the first Sikhs to have arrived in Nottingham, Mahal fulfilled a number of important roles in the community, including serving as the president of the Nottingham Sikh Gurdwara.

Grandson Amandeep Mahal said: "His story is a remarkable one, when considering that he arrived as an immigrant in England in 1953 from the Punjabi village of Mahal Gaila with only £5." By 1957 Mahal had opened a clothing wholesalers in Union Road, St Ann's. The business grew and relocated to larger premises in the Lace Market and the Meadows. The same business now operates in 25,000 square feet premises in New Basford and is run by his family.
