Dalit boy loses vision to police torture
WSN Network

Faizabad/Lucknow: Atrocities against Dalits in India continue unabated, and in the dalit party BSP ruled UP, such incidents are by no means unheard of. A shocking tragedy happened when policemen under the Mayawati government tortured a dalit boy in custody and caused loss of his eyesight in Faizabad. After a crescendo of protests by the people, an inquiry by higher officers of the police found the cops guilty and a case was registered against five policemen.

Faizabad SSP RKS Rathore was forced to order the case the probe conducted by Ayodhya Circle Officer R K Pandey. Doctors have confirmed that the boy had lost his vision.

Police functioning is not much different anywhere in India, and in this case too the police had earlier claimed that the boy was a thief. In fact, Rathore had defended the police action saying that he was wanted in a case of theft and the police had recovered 18 mobile phones from him. Later, it was found that the boy was forced him to confess as a result of torture.

Rohit’s father Ram Dev said, “The police arrested my son in a false case of theft and tortured him in illegal custody.” He alleged that the policemen had demanded Rs 25,000 to release his son, but he could not arrange the amount. “When I approached senior officials, leaders and the media, the police booked him in a theft case and sent him to jail,” he added.
