WSN Network

MOMBASA: Members of The Sikh Supreme Council and Members of Siri Guru Singh Sabha Mombasa donate to Internally displaced persons in Likoni area. While handing over donations to the affected persons the third Vice Chairman of Sikh Supreme Council (Kenya) who is also the Chairman of Siri Guru Singh Sabha, Mr. Surjit Singh Sagoo called on Kenyans to pray for peacein the country, Coastweek reported.

Sagoo together with other members of the council held prayers for the displaced persons after donating items worth Shs.100 ,000. ($ 1,500) He said the council’s head quarters in Nairobi was involved in a similar exercise in centers where displaced persons are taking refuge.

A similar donation worth Shs.1.5 million ($ 22,000 approximately) is going on in Nairobi and is more extensive because they are also providing free medication, he said. And Former Young Catholic Women’s Association (YCWA) Mombasa Branch Chairperson, Mrs. Hellen Anayu, said the Government should issue directives on how displaced children would be enrolled in other schools.

“We are waiting for a word from the Government and keep on trusting in God that peace will return to our country”, she said. The YCWA Centre in Likoni has been hosting 50 children who are part of 100 displaced families in the post election skirmishes. Women and children stay in the centre while men only, come for meals and take shelter elsewhere. The centre manager, Mrs. Joyce Salanu, said volunteer teachers have been offering lessons to the pupils in one of the halls since Monday.

Mrs. Salanu, however, said learning was not adequate due to lack of teaching materials. “What we are doing now is to keep the children busy but for real learning they must go to school”, she said.
