2nd Annual Guru
Nanak Celebration on US Capitol Hill
WSN Network
Washington:
On Sunday, January 20, 2008 Sikhs from around the Nation congregated
in celebration of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Birth Anniversary in the
Cannon House Office Building in the Caucus Room on Capitol Hill.
This is the second time the celebration was held at the prestigious
site. However, this year marked the first time Sikh’s from around
the country participated.
The program began
with readings and singing from the Sikh Holy Scripture the Sri Guru
Granth Sahib and ended with prayer for the well being of society.
The first year just over 200 attendees' participated and this year
well above 400 representatives from Sikh Organizations and
distinguished guests were in attendance. The event was also unique
as it was completely a community effort and not the sole effort of
any individual or institution. “Our community and how we live within
it are important as that was very much what the Guru’s wanted from
the Khalsa,” remarked one of the coordinators of the event. Many
members of the Sikh Community commended the US Congress, US Capitol
Police, and other agencies who permitted the event’s attendees to
attend the event with all articles of their faith in full force. One
attendee commented “It is such an honor for us to come to our
Nation’s capital and be able to preserve our respect and dignity in
the process this has been an amazing and historic opportunity.”
The event held at the
US Capitol propels the message that Sikhs are proud of being part of
American Society and active contributors in every phase of its
prosperity. Guru Nanak urged humanity to meditate on God's
attributes of truth, creativity, fearlessness, without animosity or
negativity towards others. Each disciple of spirituality may work
out his/her own patterns of religious practices. The founding
fathers of American society formulated the US constitution and modes
of governance in respect to freedom of speech and religious
observation. The five hour long event was broadcast live on the
internet at: www.passionfortruthtv.com.
