Will Akali groups unite for SGPC
elections?
WSN Network
AMRITSAR: With
the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections on the anvil,
hectic parleys are on among Panthic organisations to form a united
front to take the challenge of the Shiromani Akali Dal head on.
This time
Diaspora Sikhs are playing a pivotal role and have told all Panthic
groups in Punjab to either form a united front against Badals or
forget about any support.
Even when it
came to extending support to the family of Darshan Singh Lohara, who
died in police firing in Ludhiana on December 5 during the bid to
oppose the function of Divja Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan, it were the
Diaspora Sikhs who came forward to match the government and SGPC
grants.
The ruling
Akalis are really afraid of the capacities and respect that Akali
Dal (Panch Prdhani) president Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu enjoys, so he
has been conveniently tucked away in a jail cell in a false case.
However, concerned Sikh groups who are sick of the ties of the
Badals with the BJP-RSS will explore the possibility of bringing
together Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani), Dal Khalsa, Damdami Taksal, SAD
(Amritsar) and many other like minded groups.
SAD (A) chief
Simranjit Singh Mann has already confirmed that talks were on and
"we wish all groups come together to save the Panth from the
clutches of Badals" but it is anyone's guess as to what level of
flexibility will leaders like S. Mann show if panthic unity is to be
achieved. And how will the Sarnas of the DSGMC play their cards?
The SGPC with a
budget of more than Rs 300 crore has been a source of power for the
Badals who have stuffed the body with their yes men. Any attempt to
reform the functioning of the SGPC has been strongly resisted by the
Badals who have found in Avtar Singh Makkar someone who
unhesitatingly and unquestioningly implements the agenda dictated by
Sukhbir Singh Badal.
