Joke was on the ‘Prof’ at
Punjabi varsity alumni meet
WSN Network
PATIALA:
As the alumni
meet of the Punjabi University got underway, some embarassing
moments were in store with a rather itinerant journalist alumni
taking the mike and addressing Akali Dal leader Prem Singh
Chandumajra as “Sardar” and then underlining that he could not call
him a “Professor” as Chandumajra never earned the title. “You taught
in the university for a few months and you call yourself a
professor. So do others when they address you. It takes a lecturer
years of dedicated service to become a professor but some people
think it is okay to start calling themselves a professor because
they have achievedsome status in politics,” the journalist alumni
told the audience as VC Dr Jaspal Singh and Chandumajra watched
helplessly.
Chandumajra
called the journalist “frustrated” but the scribe stuck to his stand
and dragged in Balwant Singh, the disgraced former state secretary
of CPI(M) in Punjab who also prefixes “professor” with his name.
As a rather
naive reaction, Dr Jaspal Singh announced that he bestows the degree
of Professorship on Chandumajra right now and here”, little
understanding the point that the accusing alumni made or the
laughter that followed. As for Balwant Singh, those who have earned
their professorships should have been the ones to oppose such
characters from calling themselves as Professor.
Balwant Singh
was suspended from the party only a couple of weeks ago by CPI(M)
general secretary Prakash Karat on charges of moral turpitude.
