A Sacramento Eid Celebration
with a Difference
WSN Network
SACRAMENTO:
Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated at several venues in
Sacramento,
California
with a great deal of enthusiasm. Many Muslims of Punjabi origins
live in the area, some whose ancestors came here a hundred years
earlier. The downtown Sacramento V Street Mosque is amongst the
oldest in the United States and is often the focus of Eid
festivities.
Activities like
face-painting, giant slides and bounce houses marked the Eid
festivities on a perfect fall day. On October 10th, the Eid
celebrations at the Kabob Palace in Elk Grove (South of
Sacramento)
saw participation of California Assembly Member Dave Jones from the
9th District. Assembly Member Jones had invited Muslims to celebrate
Eid with him.
Rep. Jones
admired the outreach activity of groups like the Muslim American
Society and CAIR which he said had increased his own understanding
of the community. The WSN welcomes such gestures from the American
opinion makers as it helps in breaking the false stereotypes of
Muslim image in these divisive times. One can only hope that the
Indian government, particularly the right wing parties in India,
learn some lessons as they vilify the Muslim youth without rhyme or
reason.
