Next generation of terrorists will come from Pak says U.S. think tank
Priyaleen K Renuka

WASHINGTON: As if things weren’t already bad enough in Pakistan, which is in a suspended state of anarchy, a U.S. think tank is the latest in line to amplify the chorus: that Pakistan is heading towards a chaotic collapse.

With reports of the Taliban having taken over the Swat valley and gradually making inroads into the rest of the country, Daniel Markey of the Council of Foreign Relations in Washington says in his latest 17-page report that if the rapid Talibanisation of Pakistan continues, the next generation of the world's most sophisticated terrorists will be born, indoctrinated, and trained in this nuclear-armed nation.
While Markey is bound to be hailed in the western world for his insightful report, one might deign to ask why is everyone surprised, if indeed they are, by Markey’s finding or forecast, call it what you will.

Pakistan’s current state of affairs is a result of not only its own political masters’ doing but also a result of the concerted U.S. foreign policy in the region, including Afghanistan.

In a recent report, the U.S. Council of Foreign Relations suggests that Pakistan is potentially the next breeding ground for Islamist extremism given its steady Talibanisation and its proximity to Afghanistan. The question is – Is anyone surprised by this or rather is the average Pakistani being given a better option?

It is no secret that the Taliban are a creation of the United States; with Osama bin Laden armed by and having fought as a faithful soldier of Uncle Sam in the 1980s to counter the Soviet infiltration into Afghanistan.

It suited the United States very well at the time that Afghanistan was on its way, again courtesy U.S. sponsored arms and money, to become a haven for the Taliban and its regressive ideology. That Afghanistan became a breeding ground for terrorists was clearly known to America and actively encouraged by it then, because it suited the United States’ geopolitics in the region.

Pakistan’s unashamed catering of the whims and fancies of the U.S. army and air force in the region also clearly signaled the things to come. The fact that even now, Pakistan allows unsuspecting and innocent Pakistani civilians to be slain on a daily basis by surprise U.S. drone attacks should be evidence enough of the Pakistani state’s active collusion in the matter.

Pakistani Taliban invite Osama bin Laden to settle in Swat

Sending the Pakistan government into a tizzy to do some damage control, the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat Valley have said they would welcome militants from Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries who intend to settle in the region. Muslim Khan, a Taliban spokesman said insurgents of Arab origin who are willing to fight the US-led troops in neighbouring Afghanistan were welcome and would be protected. Khan added, "Osama (Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden) can also come here

That Pakistan chose to openly be a part of the U.S fake “war on terror” and that it allowed itself to be used actively by America as it arbitrarily waged its personal war against the Muslim world and killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people in the Middle East, in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the name of justice, is also something that the average Pakistani populace is aware of.

To top it all, the complete failure of Pakistan as a nation state and the complete failure of successive military and civilian regimes to ensure a decent and safe livelihood for its people, should perhaps be reason enough for its people to think that extremism might be a better option.

They will, of course be disappointed there as well.
