Haryana Sikh leader Nalwi backs
Congress
WSN Network
HARYANA: A
faction of the ad hoc Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee
(HSGPC), led by Didar Singh Nalwi, has decided to support the
Congress party's candidates in the parliamentary elections.
Nalwi not only
justified the decision but also praised the Congress leadership for
withdrawing the candidatures of senior party leaders Jagdish Tytler
and Sajjan Kumar, who were allegedly involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh
genocide.
He, however,
preferred not to comment on the “vote-rich” Sirsa-based dera. This
sudden “change of heart” is reportedly the outcome of a recent
meeting between a delegation of the Nalwi faction and Chief Minister
Bhupinder Singh Hooda in New Delhi on April 17.
Experts said
persuasion of the Sikh leader was aimed at improving poll results
for the Congress in four parliamentary constituencies - Sirsa,
Kurukshetra, Ambala and Karnal - which have a large number of Sikh
voters.
The issues of
second-language status to Punjabi and constitution of a state
minority panel in Haryana are still hanging fire.
