WSN Network

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday quashed sediton charges against 19 Dal Khalsa activists in an almost four year old case.

Counsel for the petitioners Advocate Navkiran Singh said that Justice Shri Arvind Kumar quashed the sedition charges against all Dal Khalsa members under section 153-B, 124-A, 120-B.

The Amritsar session court had framed charges against 19 activists of the Dal Khalsa including its president Harcharanjit Singh Dhami under various charges, including sedition, for hoisting what they referred to as the "Sarkar-e-Khalsa Flag" on 26 Jan 2005. The case was registered at Police Station Islamabad in Amritsar.

Amritsar District Additional Session Judge Hemant Gopal framed charges against 19 activists under 153-B, 124-A, 336 IPC and 27/54/59 Arms Act in April this year. All the accused are on bail. The next date of hearing in the case was fixed for 9th November 2009.

Kanwarpal Singh, party spokesperson, said while 10 top leaders were named, the FIR mentioned 25 "unidentified" persons. The name of known Khalistani ideologue, Jagjit Singh Chauhan, was also mentioned in the case but in the meantime he died on April 4, 2007.

Kanwarpal said the function was organized, to "salute the Sikh Flag for keeping alive the memory and dedication of all martyrs who laid down their lives to protect the Sikh faith and people."

He further stated that this order should serve as a warning to the police administration as well as the state executive, which keeps on foisting illegal cases on those Sikhs who hold independent thoughts and beliefs.

Among those against whom charges have been quashed are: H. S. Dhami, Satnam Singh Paonta Sahib, Kanwarpal Singh, Sarabjit Singh Ghuman, Balraj Singh Bhalaipur, Dr Manjinder Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Arpal Singh, Baldev Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Arjan Singh, Gurdeep Singh, Giani Amrik Singh, Sukhdev Singh, Sarwan Singh and  Avtar Singh.
