New Women Studies Centre at Punjabi University, Patiala
WSN Network

PATIALA: Punjab University, Patiala has got a new Women's Studies Centre sponsored by University Grants Commission. The Centre was inaugurated by V-C Dr Jaspal Singh on Tuesday who said it should work as a "pressure group" to aggressively enforce gender equality. The Centre's major function should be to conduct academic studies in the causes and traditions that underlie such social malaise.

Recounting the prevailing gender discrimination, Singh said women constitute half of the population in the world but share only 10 per cent of income. Similarly, of the total property, women share only 1 per cent while men own the rest, he claimed. "Of all parliaments world over, 90 per cent seats are represented by men. And in the executive and bureaucracy, women's share is only 3.5 per cent," he added.

The V-C said the preference for male child symbolises a deep social malady that needs to be corrected through education and awareness.
