Jalandhar: A
15-day long Nagar Kirtan (religious procession) focusing on
environmental awareness in connection with the birth anniversary of
first Sikh Master, Guru Nanak Dev ji, took off last Monday from
village Dhanoa in district Hoshiarpur, the origin point and
catchment area of the historic Kali Bein.
Each day, the
Nagar Kirtan is beginning at 3 in the morning but stops moving at 8.
During the stopover, the stretches of the Bein are being cleaned by
the volunteers thus exhibiting synergistic equation between sermons
and action. A JCB machine is also moving alongside the Nagar Kirtan
to clear the weeds, silt etc from the rivulet that had grown.
The Nagar kirtan
has entered in the seventh year but this time its duration has been
increased from five to fifteen days. Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal,
who led the volunteer effort to clean the historic rivulet and has
been organizing the religious procession, said that while earlier
the Ngar Kirtan was moving along the banks of the Bein, this year it
would be going in the villages near the Bein.
The Nagar Kirtan
would reach Sultanpur Lodhi, where Guru Nanak got enlightenment
while bathing in the Bein, on November 2, the gurpurab of Sikhism's
founder.
The villagers
were urged to plant trees and to keep the natural water resources
clean. Baba Seechewal said that Gurbani had laid great emphasis on
harmony with nature and respect for it. He urged the people that
while they should not throw dirty water in the Kali Bein or other
natural water resources they should also stop the factories and
government bodies from doing so.
