on higher education
WSN Network
FREMONT:
A path breaking seminar, focusing on the admissions process and
financial aid opportunities for higher education institutions, held
at Gurdwara Sahib, Fremont on November 17, 2007, provided a unique
opportunity for the local community to learn about issues related to
higher education and was designed to help families to plan for the
future of their children.
This was
the first such Educational Seminar where more than 250 families from
various Bay Area cities participated, and both parents and children
showed equal enthusiasm. Focus was laid on giving students the
important tools and approaches to get ready for college and help
families understand the opportunities available for funding their
children’s education.
The
seminar plan was conceived and implemented by young Sikh
professionals and sponsored by Gurdwara Sahib with a
view to encourage school students to pursue higher education.
Representatives of universities and colleges that shared college
admission process with the participants included Santa Clara
University;
CSU East Bay Hayward; Stanford University; De Anza
College; San Jose State University; Unitek Vocational College
Fremont and University of California Berkeley.
High school juniors and seniors were given information on how to
select their major. It was emphasized that students must choose
their major according to their level of interest.
A panel of young
professionals related their own college experiences and advised
young Sikhs to pursue their passion while selecting their careers.
Positive feedback was received from participants who appreciated
such a platform, where their concerns were addressed. Parents also
learnt about monitoring the grade of their children and the
importance of open communication with teachers. In addition, a
mentorship program was announced wherein a mentor/volunteer will be
assigned to each willing family, who will become their single point
of contact to preparing them for college. Based on the feedback
received, similar seminars and SAT preparation classes shall be
arranged in the future. For more information on future programs, pl
