India Inc. votes for fascist Modi
WSN Bureau

In times when America is showing the world that there is a path that can beat the old foggies, the old rivaliries, the old animosities and that can take us to new roads leading to an equilitarian world, India's big guns of business, industray and trade cam together to hail a man widely seen as communal, perceived as guilty for killings of innocent Muslims in riots and denied even a visa by the United States because of those reasons.

But India Inc. said that man should lead India.

Narendra Modi of the right wing Hindu nationalist party that roughshods over all diversities and want all to call themselves Hindu first if they really want to be considered good Indians, was hailed as the dream Prime Minister to lead India.

Modi managed a show of support from captains of industry that could have been the envy of any chief minister or even a Prime Minister but would clearly have been a major shame for anyone cheering for President Barack Obama who would rather pursue the line that "All are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness."

The right thinking people anywhere would have been perturbed at such a development, reminiscent of the fascist Germany before WWII when industry had hailed Hitler as the man suited to business interests and their idea of development. Nothing much has changed in the fascist domain in all these years, it seems.

Who said what

Anil Ambani : “Narendrabhai has done good…a person like him should be the next leader of the country.”

Sunil Bharti Mittal: “Chief Minister Modi is known as a CEO, but he is …running a state and can also run the nation...If one Narendrabhai can be so much for Gujarat, imagine what is the possibility of India having Narendrabhai as the next leader."

Ratan Tata: "I think Modi should be the man to lead India."

But what was amusing in the BJP was that a rank communal leader like L K Advani got pitched against a rank communal and killer leader Narendra Modi. And they had credentials enough to clash with each other. One had led a movement to communalise the entire country by leading a movement and overseeing the destruction of Babri Masjid, a sacred mosque of the Muslims, to raise a temple for the glory of Lord Rama. The other had matched such pious plans with allowing and abetting days of riots against the Muslims and whipping up partisan backlash in Gujarat that had communalise the state boasting of India's Mahatma Gandhi.

Global investors summit, called the Vibrant Gujarat summit organized at Ahmedabad, ensured that the BJP's top rung gets into a disquiet mode. The BJP leadership is uneasy.

The BJP, embarrassed that the industry has chosen another communalist overits own choice of a communalist for the Prime Ministerial chair, tried to wriggle out by claiming that the praise was meant for the entire party. But who could have been fooled?

Plans are now afoot to promote Advani among the nation’s 100 million first-time voters. A crore stickers would be distributed in a month and his website popularised. Advani was named BJP’s candidate for Prime Minister and the NDA, too backed his candidature during the Gujarat polls in December 2007 when leaders realised Modi would return to power. But the announcement forced Modi to declare that he nursed no ambition and preferred to be in Gujarat.

But what the industry and business have done with their remarks was to expose as to whose leader Modi was. Most politicians will be wary of receiving encomiums from industrialists, but now it is clear that Modi is a leader dear to a certain class.
