polls lined up
WSN Network
CHANDIGARH: Lok
Sabha elections were barely over when Punjab went into an overdrive
of campaigning once again. CM Prakash Singh Badal lurched headlong
into electioneering for Nurmahal bye-poll slated for May 28 and
three more Assembly seats are coming up for elections. One of the
contests will also feature Sukhbir Singh Badal who has to win a seat
to stay Deputy CM as per law.
In Nurmahal,
Rajwinder Kaur, widow of Akali Dal legislator Gurdeep Singh Bhullar,
is the party’s candidate against Congress nominee Gurvinder Singh
Atwal. The seat fell vacant following the death of Bhullar, a
sitting Akali Dal MLA, last December.
Another Assembly
seat, Banur, had fallen vacant following the death of Cabinet
Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh in a road mishap in March.
The Jalalabad
Assembly seat had fallen vacant following the election of Akali Dal
sitting MLA Sher Singh Ghubaiya to the Lok Sabha from Ferozepur.
Shiromani Akali Dal
president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who became Deputy Chief Minister of
the State early this year, is likely to contest from Jalalabad.
Kahnuwan seat is
also vacant now after the election of Pratap Singh Bajwa from the
Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat.
