Vedanti snubs SAD, SGPC, says he
doesn't want any honor
WSN Network
Chandigarh:
Delivering a snub to the Akali Dal and the SGPC, former Akal Takht
jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti has said the SGPC kept on ignoring
his advice to devise a system of appointments and removals of
jathedars in the past eight years. He also said he does not want any
honour from the SGPC anymore.
“I wrote several
times, but the committee kept on ignoring my letters for reasons
best known to them. It would be in the interest of the Sikh panth if
such a system is devised, which should take into account factors
like capabilities, contributions and experience of the person,” the
former head of the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs said. On
Friday, Vedanti took part in a kirtan samagam in the city, organized
by the All India Sikh Students’ Federation.
He said his
meeting with the Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee (DGMC)
president, Paramjit Singh Sarna, was held “purely to discuss
religious issues”. Vedanti said he suggested Sarna to arrange to
have an “authentic, good quality translation of Guru Granth Sahib”,
since there have been many distortions prevalent. “He, in turn,
asked me to take up the project and assured to support it,” the
jathedar stated.
Sounding a note
of caution on the Dera Sacha Sauda issue after his successor talked
of “possibility of a solution after October”, Vedanti said any
decision should be made only after taking into account the
sentiments of Sikhs.
Claiming that he
never asked the Sikhs to support prime minister Manmohan Singh on
any political issue, he, however, admitted that he had praised the
man. “I told the media that the PM had given a good name to the
community by his actions, intelligence and conduct and I still stand
by this.”
Vedanti
reiterated that he did not want any honour after he had been
privileged enough to serve the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs
for eight years.
