Punjab polity diction hits nadir,
Sukhbir talks of mental health
of rival
WSN Network
Chandigarh:
At a time when thousands were renedered homeless in
Punjab
and scores of villages were drowned under flood waters,
Punjab's ruling
as well as opposition politicians were indulging in utterly
frivolous statements and counter statements. First, it was Akali Dal
president Sukhbir Singh Badal who 'advised" with a straight face his
rival and former CM Amarinder Singh of Congress to go for
“psychiatric treatment”.
He even said he
will be asking his father and chief minister Parkash Singh Badal "to
arrange for it as Amarinder is not only former chief minister but
also a former Akali leader." In response, nine Congress MLAs issued
a statement commenting upon Sukhbir's hallucinations and his state
of mind. Sukhbir's camp got Akali Dal general secretary Prem Singh
Chandumajra to exhort Amarinder to go in for a "sustained treatment
by some Pakistani nurse".
One can only
imagine to what level has the
Punjab polity
fallen. As for the media, it dutifully published much of the rubbish
emerging from both camps, forgetting that the limpet politicians
were claiming precious news columns that could be devoted to
reportage about the flood hit people.
While Sukhbir
said Amarinder’s plight was “pitiable" and he was "now at the mercy
of second-rung leaders within the Congress, whom he had once treated
as scum,", Congress MLAs responded by saying their party will win
all 13 seats and that was what was worrying Sukhbir. Enter
Chandumajra with his words of wisdom: "The fact that it took no less
than nine MLAs to vouch for the psychic stability of Amarinder
Singh, is proof enough that Sukhbir's fears about Amarinder's mind
are not unfounded. Had the Akali Dal president been wrong, it would
have taken just one sane MLA to put to rest all doubts among the
people about the resident of what Congress MLAs privately call
Patiala's 'Fool's Paradise.' "
So much for the
state of politics and debate in
Punjab.
