One man's actions vitiate calm at Fremont gurdwara
Satnam Singh Khalsa

FREMONT: At a time when the Sikh sangat was all awashed in the spirit of religiosity and the death anniversary of Sant Kartar Singh Ji Bhindrwanwale was being observed, marked with kirtan, katha and scholarly expositions about Sikhism, the entire atmosphere of the Fremont Gurdwara was vitiated by sudden swooping down of several police vehicles blaring sirens all around the premises.

At the core of this commotion was Jaswant Singh Dhaliwal who had hired a bodyguard and this bodyguard was carrying a loaded gun, something that clearly was not in tune with the kind of atmosphere one expects at a spiritual place.

For the past some time, Jaswant Singh Dhaliwal tags along this bodyguard and even obtained restraining orders against a member of the Gurdwara Sahib. In fact, after the new management committee of the religious place came to assume responsibility, he made sure that the Gurdwara gets a missive through his lawyer and sought protection citing threat to his life.

Many a times, he has behaved in an uncivilized way with members of the sangat and many sections of sangat have lodged strong protest in this regard. There is no end to efforts to vitiate the atmosphere and rough language is almost a norm with such people.

The gurughar's key sewadar Bhai Harjit Singh Khalsa said they were doing everything possible to ensure that the gurughar is not embroiled into unnecessary disputes and the atmosphere remains one of peace, harmony and spirituality. "The sangat comes to the gurdwara seeking solace and peace of mind but some people only end up disturbing the peace and woinding many hearts and souls. This brings a bad name to the Gurdwara Sahib," he said.

Forced against the wall, the Gurdwara Management has now been forced to take action to prevent any damage to the reputation of the Gurdwara Sahib, peace and harmony among the sangat and ensure calm on the premises, and as a result, the management committee in an emergency meeting has decided to obtain a restraining order against the individual who has been indulging in unbecoming acts at the gurdwara.

This decision was taken unanimously.
