Badal set to make
Haryana's move on SGPC a major issue
WSN Bureau
CHANDIGARH:
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has made up his mind to
make a major issue out of the separate SGPC for Haryana and will be
writing a strongly worded letter to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi as
well as PM Manmohan Singh warning them to desist from the move or be
prepared to face the consequences in Punjab.
Top sources of WSN said a decision has been taken in principle to
make this one of the core issues in the upcoming Parliamentary
elections. As it is, Badal has already issued media statements
warning the Union Government and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh
against meddling in Sikh affairs, particularly on disbanding the
SGPC in Haryana.
The Centre should calm frayed nerves in Jammu and Kashmir, which has
been on the boil for so many years, he said.
Sources said the letters to Sonia and Manmohan Singh will have
references to Master Tara Singh-Nehru-Liaqat Ali Khan pact and will
include a warning that the Haryana move was being allegedly
instigated by Paramjit Singh Sarna and Amarinder Singh and will
drive once again a wedge between Congress and the Sikhs.
Any such move would push the country into religious divide, Badal
has already said. He accused the successive Congress governments at
the Centre of backing down on commitments made to the state. Badal
is trying to make the NDA leadership see logic in his decision to
make it a touchstone issue in Punjab as it will also help counter
the pressure to back Congress if it fields Manmohan Singh as the
candidate for PMship again.
