Sikh martyrs who fell in Italy

FORLI
(ITALY): Commemorating the sacrifice and bravery of more than 3,000
martyred Sikhs at various battle grounds in Italy, an event was
organized at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Navlora on August 22, 2009. Amid
much enthusiasm displayed by the Sikh sangat, the sacrifices of the
brave soldiers of 2nd, 8th, 15th, 16th Punjab Regiment and 11th Sikh
Regiment, 1st Sikh Engineers Miners and Sapper Regiment, 12th
Frontier Force, 4th, 8th and 10th Indian Division were recalled.
Of
the 800 soldiers of British Indian forces, some 347 were Sikhs
killed Forli. The battle and the contribution of the Sikhs is well
documented in Bhupinder Singh Holland's book on Europe's debt to the
Sikhs.
A key centre of
attraction was Sipoy Number 42412, Sardar Daulta Singh, who was part
of the first Sikh Engineers Miners and Sapper Regiment and hailed
from Village Gurail in district Jalandhar. He had come with his
Italy-based son Avtar Singh. He was honored with a siropa and a
plaque.
A few other
soldiers with links to the WWII were also honored.
