Martyr Khalra to be remembered on Sep 6 at Fremont Gurdwara
WSN Network

This was one man who single handedly put Indian establishment to shame, first when he was alive, and then continuously after his death. Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, human rights activist par excellence, who diligently collected damning evidence against the Punjab Police and who was abducted and murdered later, will be remembered with pride and humility this Sunday, September 6, at Gurdwara Sahib, Fremont.

The Shaheedi Samagam is being organized by Sikh Youth of America's Bay Area unit.

For years, the Sikh community and human rights activists fought to prove that Khalra was finished off after his abduction on September 6, 1995 in exactly the same way that he suspected and proved many Sikh youth were by state's forces. Later, in 2007, even the Punjab and Haryana High Court was fiorced to admit that fact when it said: "We have no hesitation in coming to the conclusion that Jaswant Singh Khalra was picked up from his house at the instance of SSP Ajit Singh Sandhu by appellants Jaspal Singh, Satnam Singh, Surinder Pal Singh, Jasbir Singh and Prithipal Singh. He was tortured at Jhabal police station and shot dead there. Finally, his body was disposed of by them near the Harike Bridge on Sutlej river."

Punjab police illegally detained, tortured, and murdered Jaswant Singh Khalra in October 1995 after he released findings of thousands of extrajudicial executions and secret cremations carried out by the police in Amritsar, Punjab. His investigations led India's Supreme Court to find "a flagrant violation of human rights on a mass scale."
