Anger builds up at Bhagat Singh’s comic stickers
WSN Network

Ludhiana: The portrayal of martyr Bhagat Singh as a comic character in some stickers has not gone down well with people — young and old alike — here.
Maninderjit Singh Bitta, national chairman of Anti-Terrorist Front, on Friday submitted an application at Machhiwara police station for registering a case against responsible companies.
‘‘It’s disrespect of the great martyr who sacrificed his life for freedom. We won’t tolerate it,’’ Bitta said. ‘‘If within a month, police do not nab the persons responsible for this, we would move the high court.’’
Asserting that many companies were involved in this, he wondered what prevented the authorities from taking action. Some unknown companies have been using Bhagat Singh’s face in place of popular comic characters like Superman. The absence of the manufacturer’s name in stickers shows that the companies were aware of possible angry reactions.
Apparently to avoid controversy, all shopkeepers, who were selling stickers until a few days back, have stopped the sale.
‘‘It’s strange that just for money companies have stooped so low and started showing great martyrs as comic characters,’’ said Dharm Singh, former state president of Freedom Fighters’ Association. He demanded strict action against the guilty and confiscation of stickers from shops.
Sharp reactions have come from youngsters as well. ‘‘No one has any right to use the great martyr’s face to mint money,’’ said Mandeep, a youngster who works as a manager with an MNC.
Jap Singh, another youngster, demanded strict action against the persons responsible for this disrespect.
‘‘It has hurt the sentiments of not only Punjabis, but the entire country. Strict action under law can be taken against the responsible companies,’’ said advocate Rajesh Inderpal.
