Punjab farmers get just 1 per cent
of loan waiver bonanza

CHANDIGARH:
Punjab farmers would get a loan waiver/relief amounting to Rs 986.82
crore - just 1 per cent of the total loan waiver announced by the
Indian government under the agriculture debt waiver scheme. The
Punjab government, waking from its slumber, has now decided to
approach the Centre for a special package for farmers.
As per the
calculation, the scheme will benefit nearly 3.32 lakh farmers in the
state.
Chief Secretary
Ramesh Inder Singh, who held a meeting to review implementation of
the Union government loan waiver scheme here, was told that loans
amounting to Rs 634.56 crore of 1,79,160 small and marginal farmers
would be waived under the scheme. Be sides, nearly 1,53,712 farmers
would get relief amounting to Rs 352.62 crore.
All nationalised/co-operative
banks have identified the beneficiaries of this scheme and lists
have been already been displayed on the notice board of each branch.
Financial
Commissioner Cooperation Kusumjit Sidhu said at the meeting that
every bank had been asked to disburse the relief and waive the loan
amount by June 30.
