Indian govt gives
nod for extension of freight corridor
to Amritsar
WSN Network
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has agreed in principle to connect
Mumbai and Amritsar through a freight corridor that will allow
increased domestic and international freight activities.
The decision to this effect was conveyed to the Punjab Chief
Minister Prakash Singh Badal when he met Manmohan Singh last
Wednesday in Delhi. Media advisor to the Punjab Chief Minister
Harcharan Bains indicated that the state expects a formal clearance
in January. He added that the chief minister was impressed by the
prime minister's initiatives to strengthen the national trade artery
given the increased prospects of international trade through the
Attari border.
Earlier, the Centre planned a freight corridor up to Ludhiana, but
Punjab had been insisting on extending it to the Indo-Pak border.
The PM had also given an assurance that the Centre would consider
Punjab's request for setting up of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),
Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and Indian Institute of
Information Technology (IIIT) in the state.
