Punjab snubs Haryana on separate
HC issue, Chidambaram on Chandigarh
WSN Network
CHANDIGARH:
Strongly snubbing the Haryana government, Punjab has slammed the
idea of a separate high court for Haryana in
Chandigarh
itself and also criticised the Centre for delaying the transfer of
Chandigarh to Punjab.
Reacting to
Union Minister for Law and Justice Veerappa Moily’s move to seek
Punjab’s after Haryana CM BS Hooda wanted the Centre to expedite the
setting up of a separate high court, Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal
said Haryana may jolly well have its own high court but the demand
for locating it at
Chandigarh
could not be accepted.
He said proposal
was another effort to turn
Chandigarh
into a perpetual
Union
Territory.
Earlier, in a
separate letter to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Badal warned
against any Central initiative to restore the post of Chief
Commissioner of Chandigarh.
He said any
change in the present administrative structure of the
Union
Territory
would lead to unrest. At present, the Governor of Punjab is the UT
Administrator.
This practice
was started in 1984 when there were fears that
Punjab’s
political restlessness would influence
Chandigarh.
A missive from
Chidambaram on the Chief Commissioner issue elicited a sharp retort
from Badal reminded the Centre that in order to get control of the
city, Punjabis were forced to launch mass agitation as result of
which thousand of Punjabis had to court arrest.
