San Jose airport workers to knock
doors of Mayor:
Chuck Reed
WSN Network
SAN JOSE:
Majority of the
workers including Sikh drivers at Hertz Rental Car Company were
cheated in violation of City Ordinance. Hertz Company moved a lot of
employees out of the Airport Area so that it does not have to pay $
13.99 per hour wages and can continue to pay $ 9.50 per hour. Close
to 100 workers, well known Sikh community leader Mohinder Mann,
Jaswinder S Jandi Supreme Council Member of Fremont gurdwara, Harjot
S Khalsa, President of Management
Committee and Satnam Singh Khalsa, General Secretary of the
committee, besides Gurinder Singh, a member, attended the local
union meeting of these workers. From the airport workers, Mr.
Lehmber Singh, Surjeet Singh, Vikram Singh and Mr Chuck Andrew spoke
openly.
Mr Chuck Andrew
even asked that the workers should stop paying the Union dues
because the Union seemed to be hand in glove with the Hertz Rental
Car Company. Mr. Mohinder Mann said that we should support the Union
because the need of the hour was unity of the right thinking people
and efforts should be made to approach all the City Council Members,
irrespective of the fact that the Mayor is perceived to be
pro-business.
The Union and
the Committee members of San Jose Airport will draft a memorandum
that will be presented to the San Jose Mayor. The Memorandum will
make clear the outrage at the underhanded, devious employer tactics
through which employers were depriving the union members of the
Living Wage Ordinance's protections by forcing into union contracts,
over the objections of unions and their members, contract language
exempting employers and their union-member employees from the living
Wage Ordinance and call on the Mayor and the City Council to
immediately take all steps necessary to amend the Living Wage
Ordinance to remove that deplorable loophole in the law which
enables employers to exempt their union-represented employees from
the protections of Living Wage Ordinance and to restore to all
working people the intended protection of the law.
In the end,
Jaswinder Singh Jandi, in the presence of Mr. Samra, promised to
support all the brothers working at the Airport by all means. Next
meeting of all the members and Union will be held in couple of days
with the help of Attorney Mohinder Singh Mann to take the next
course of action.
