Ram Leela
The epic of
Ramayan dates back to centuries and has appropriately been stated
as THE GREATEST THEATRICAL SHOW ON EARTH by an eminent foreign
critic who also mentioned that the Ramayan story is staged every
year for 10 days and is watched by an audience of thousands at every
show. Spread all over India and it
could be said that the total viewers could be found 50 million to
100 million. Thus the veracity of the statement is undoubted and no
show on earth comes anywhere near to the Ramayans Ram Leela.
An effort is now
been attempted to present the Ram Leela show on stage within a
period of 3 hours ,which in itself is a challenging task.as to
compress the whole panorama of the epic needs very skillful handling
in Directorship and individual performance of the artists
themselves keeping in view modern trends of production ane time
saving for audiences to see the whole show it is neccessary to adopt
new tactics and innovations in presentation.
Hence Theatre
Arts Chandigarh who is one of the leading theatre group of North India
has worked on a concise script, backround effects, light and sound
management and background recordings.Another innovative feature is
the presentation of painted background canvases which show differnt
periods with quick change, rollup or roll down techniques. A photo
display of some of the scenes gives a birds eve view of the
presentation.
The cast
contains only 15 members who are leading television and film actors
inclding B N Sharma. The make up and costumes are designed to match
the period of the play without having any intricate or difficult to
transport sets as these will be replaced by the background canvases
with quick change possibilities .
The 3 hour mega
show is directed by well known theatre director and Balraj Sahni
award winner director Rajiv Mehta of Chandigarh.
Through modern techniques sound recordings and musical background
have been created for special effects. Basically this is a
theatrical presntation with the whole story being effectively
portrayed on the stage by the artistes, however with the relevant
songs and musical interludes being prerecorded.
