SGPC courts shame with poor show
at Foundation Day
WSN Network
AMRITSAR:
The foundation
day function of the SGPC celebrated at the Akal Takht was a totally
ignored affair and media reports termed it a flop and a damp squib
as only three of the 185 SGPC members bothered to attend it. This
was the first time ever that the SGPC had decided to mark the day
and the man who thought of the brilliant idea, SGPC president Avtar
Singh Makkar, was nowhere around.
Neither did
other officer-bearers or executive members care less. Makkar had
already put in an appearance a couple of days earlier by performing
“sewa” at Golden Temple in the company of Badal family members. SGPC
general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur was the only one from the
management to attend the ceremony and deliver a keynote address.
Onkar Singh Sharifpura and Sukhbinder Singh Chabbal were the others
from the SGPC who attended the ceremony.
Even the
customary Akhand Path was not organised. It was left to SGPC
telephone operators to invite the elected and nominated members who
hardly bothered. The ceremony , which began with the Kirtan,
progressed with Bhaur and Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh
delivering speeches and concluded with prayer.
The Sikh
community often calls the SGPC the “Mini Parliament of the Sikhs”
and the role of the gurdwara managing panel has been under a scanner
for a few years now. Makkar said he could not attend as he already
had a pre-scheduled visit to Assam but said the very decision to
commemorate the day for the first time should be appreciated.
