NEW DELHI: In 1980s and early ‘90s, the Sikhs experienced what it means to be stereotyped and labelled. Currently, Muslims are getting a taste of it. Innocent Sikh young men used to be picked  up by the cops and tortured. Many of those horror stories keep coming back to haunt us. As if Jaswant Singh Khalra’s efforts at tracing such men and women who were killed and then cremated by showing them as unclaimed bodies were not enough to put to shame the establishment, now skeletons have  started tumbling out from cupboards of those who try to tar Muslims with the terror brush.

In a series of heart-wrenching accounts brought forth by some sections of the Indian media are stories of some 70 Muslim men picked up by the Hyderabad police in the wake of two terror attacks in the city last year. No one else but a government panel has now found that at least 15 of them were subjected to inhuman and indescribable torture during custody that lasted six to nine months: stripping, physical abuse, electric shocks, some had their beards plucked out. A shamed Andhra Pradesh government has now admitted they were all innocent and is now trying to buy some silence with a rehabilitation package of Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000 loans to buy autorickshaws.

Most have found themselves stimatized and ostracized. “These men were picked up by police investigating the Mecca Masjid blast on May 18 that killed nine people and the Lumbini Park and Gokul Chaat House blasts on August 26 last year that killed 42 people,” the Indian Express newspaper reported last  week. Much of the expose is the work of the Andhra Pradesh Minorities Commission which had appointed advocate Ravi Chandran and a forensics expert to study the cases. Dr T Mahender Reddy, Professor of Forensic Medicine, Government Kamineni Medical College, Hyderabad, has brought out the gory details that will shame any government in a civilised society.  However, the blatant violationof every norm of civil society has not embarrassed the executive.  State minister for Minorities Welfare Mohammed Shabbir Alisaid cooly that the youth were  ndeed innocent and and the government will compensate them but refused to blame the police.  “Police do their work based oninformation and sometimes the nformation can be wrong. Many youths were picked up but police  filed cases against only 31.

Instead of implicating the others in any other case, at least the  police released them,” he says. So much for any expectation of bringing to book those guilty of illegal detention, arrests, torture etc.
