DELHI: Former militant Ranjit Singh Gill, alias Kukki, who was
convicted in the Lalit Maken murder case and then became a shining
example of how one can re-build one's life, even winning sympathies
of the daughter of the person he murdered, has surrendered at the
Delhi High Court.
Almost a fortnight after the Delhi High Court dismissed his
petition to reconsider his life sentence, Kukki, son of former
PAU vice
chancellor Khem Singh Gill, surrendered before the Tihar Jail
officials at 10 am on Monday.
Kukki surrendered without any documents, as the courts order
are yet to be served on him.
His counsel KTS Tulsi described Kukki as "a transformed
person" and a "law-abiding citizen (who) did not wait for the papers
to be served on him."
Kukki now plans to file a special leave petition in the
Supreme Court, and hopes for reprieve. Kukki was awarded life term
and he has spent almost 19 years in jail before being granted a bail
in 2004, when he had appealed in the court that he be allowed to
meet his mother who was dying of cancer at that time. Since then
Kukki was on bail. Meanwhile, Kuki's application for clemency is
also pending before the Delhi Government. This despite the fact that
Avantika Maken, the lone child of the slain couple, had publicly
forgiven Kukki.
