For six long and
arduous hours, the self-styled holy man Gurmeet Ram Rahim who is a
prime accused in a case of rape and murder suffered the ignominy of
having to wait in a make shift court at Ambala police lines on
February 14 as the CBI cross examined a witness, a dera follower
from Kurukshetra, in the Ranjit Singh murder case.
The witness
described that he was suspected of being in possession of an
anonymous letter that painted a true and ugly picture of Gurmeet Ram
and consequently the dera followers held out threats and warned him
against divulging its contents.
The letter
carried charges against dera head Gurmeet Ram and pointed to the
illegal activities at the dera headquarters in Sirsa. The witness
was cross-examined at length by the defence counsels even as Gurmeet
Ram was made to wait at police lines before the court adjourned the
case for examination of prosecution witnesses to March 21. Special
CBI Judge A.K. Verma has already framed charges against the Gurmeet
Ram in the murder cases of dera inmate Ranjit Singh and Sirsa
journalist Ram Chander Chatterpati, and for sexual exploitation of a
sadhvi. India’s top sleuthing agency had booked the dera head under
sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insulting
the modesty of a woman) and sections 302 (murder) and 120-B
(criminal conspiracy) of IPC. The CBI had moved applications seeking
cancellation of the dera head’s bail in all the three cases,
alleging that he was misusing the concession of bail and threatening
witnesses. The court also adjourned the hearing of applications to
February 28 as the defence had failed to file a reply.
The defence has
been told to file a reply by the next date of hearing. The dera head
was booked on the complaint of Ranjit’s father, Joginder Singh, who
had said that his son was on the 10-member committee that ran the
dera affairs and was murdered on July 10, 2002 at the behest of dera
head. His body was recovered from fields in Kurukshetra.
The CBI court
had framed charges against Dera followers Subdil Singh, Jasbir
Singh, Krishan Lal and manager Inder Sain in the murder case. Ranjit
was suspected to be behind the alleged anonymous letter containing
details of goings on at the Dera and the sexual abuse of sadhvis.
