Doncaster’s grand Sikh resident
is no more
WSN Network
Popularly known
as the grandfather of Doncaster’s Sikh community, Mohan Singh Landa,
who was among the first Sikhs to settle in Britain in the 1940s and
played a key role in setting up the borough’s first Sikh gurdwara,
has died. He was 87. Unfortunately, his death came weeks before the
new gurdwara that he strived for is to open its gates to the sangat.
Hundreds turned out for his funeral on
St James Street
gurdwara. Born in Lahore in 1922, Mohan Singh moved to the UK in
1948 and travelled the length and breadth of the UK working as a
draper.
In 1955 he
settled in Hyde Park, Doncaster, saying the town attracted him with
its warmth and dignity, and he brought his family over to join him.
He later moved to Bennetthorpe. His grandson Bobby Singh said:
“Mohan Singh’s reputation preceded him as all communities and faiths
respected and idolised him as the founder, head and stalwart of
Sikhs in
Doncaster.
His mentoring to other Sikh families, now settling in
Doncaster,
allowed them to settle quickly as he took them under his wing. Mohan
Singh was one of the first Sikhs to establish a regular Sunday
sangat congregation in a small two-bed terrace in Cemetery Road.
