Sikh Coalition opens office in
Fremont

FREMONT,
CA: With a vow
to keep and intensify its efforts to engage with the concerns of the
Sikh community, the Sikh Coalition opened its new Western Region
office here this week to great fanfare. Over 120 people from media,
government, and the Sikh community joined the Coalition's staff and
board on the occasion.
For the first
time in
America's
history, the Sikh community has a national Sikh organization with
staffed offices on both coasts. A standing room only crowd
celebrated the opening. State Senator Ellen Corbett, representatives
of Congressman Peter Stark (D-CA) and Congresswoman Jackie Speier
(D-CA), the Mayors of Union City and Milpitas, 2 Fremont City
Council Members and one Hayward City Council Members; the City
Manager of Fremont, representatives of the EEOC, and the Federal
Security Director for San Francisco International Airport, Ed Gomez,
were a part of the festivities.
State Senator
Ellen Corbett presented the Sikh Coalition with a commendation from
the California State Senate for its leadership in the arena of civil
rights. The Coalition has provided services to the Western Region
since its inception. The opening of a dedicated office ill amplify
our work with and for the community.
Coalition
spokesperson Prabhjot Singh said in the wake of 9/11 attacks, such
an organization was sorely required and though it has tried to help
out, the opening of an office in Bay Area where a large number of
the community members are concentrated, the Coalition hopes to
emerge as a center for human rights struggle in the region.

were present to buck-up and assure the Coalition of their support
were AGPC coordinator Dr Pritpal Singh, Fremont Gurdwara president
Harjot Singh Khalsa, gen sec Satnam Singh Khalsa, Supreme Council
member Jaswinder Singh Jandi, Bhai Ram Singh, former president
Hardev Singh Bhalwan, Sikh Youth of America's S. Jasjeet Singh,
Akali Dal (Mann)'s Pritam Singh Joga and many others. For any more
