First Turbaned Police
Recruit in New Zealand
WSN Bureau
AUCKLAND:
While Jagmohan Singh Malhi may have got the honours for being the
first turbaned police officer in New Zealnd, the honours for paving
the path for allowing the wearing of the turban goes to Amaninder
Singh Sandhu, the first police recruit in the New Zealand Police for
preparing the ground for such an eventuality.
In fact Amaninder Singh Sandhu preceeded Jagmohan Singh by a few
days, but Jagmohan came into the limelight. As the Sikh Council of
New Zealand has said, both deserve kudos
for doing the community proud.
The Sikh Council of New Zealand alongside Amandinder Singh went
through a serious of consultations over a period of one year
starting September 2007 to change protocols from the police hat to
the turban. The cooperative and accomodating attitude of the New
Zealand police administration including the RNZ police college and
the National Manager for Uniform and Equipment were key players in
the turnaround.
So, while Jagmohan Singh will be on duty in Nelson, Amandinder Singh
will be seen issuing tickets in Auckland Central in the times to
come.
