'Surrey's Civic Treasure' Award
WSN Network
Surrey:
Well known artist Jarnail Singh has won another honor. He was one of
the 12 prominent persons from the fields of art, music, dance and
culture who received the city of Surrey's First Civic Treasures
Awards at the Surrey Art Centre earlier this week. Mayor Diana Watts
presented award medallion to Jarnail Singh at the packed Surrey Art
Gallery's studio theatre.
Surrey's Civic
Treasures Award, based on the National Treasures model, is one of
eight events and projects that define the city's role as Canada's
Cultural Capital for 2008. The Civic Treasures Award Program
recognizes and celebrates Surrey's highest achievers in the cultural
sector, demonstrating that Surrey values arts and heritage and those
people who dedicate their lives and achieve success in these
fields.
In this first
year of the program the City of Surrey has identified 12 award
recipients and presented them with a specially commissioned
medallion. This was an acknowledgement for these award recipients
and generates greater awareness, interest and support for arts and
heritage in Surrey.
Jarnail Singh
said it is a matter of pride and honor for him that at the first
awards event, he is representing the community. "My paintings tell
about the history and culture of Punjab and Sikhs .In a
multicultural society they play an important part in cross-cultural
understanding, which is very crucial in a diverse society. They are
building bridges between communities."
Well known for
his paintings of Sikh history and Punjab Culture, Jarnail Singh was
in Vancouver Sun's list of 100 South Asians who have made
significant contribution to Canadian life. He is also on the board
of Arts Council of Surrey and was a member of City of Surrey's
Public Art Advisory Committee.
