After RSS, Maharashtra govt
rises in Virk's support
WSN Network
Chandigarh: After the show of support for DGP SS Virk in Pune by
various parties and prominent people, including the Hindu extremist
Sangh parivar, a BJP leader is arriving in Punjab in the next few
days on a fact finding mission in his “personal capacity” on the
Virk case.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has also woken up on Virk’s
case and deputy chief minister R R Patil, who also happens to be the
state home minister, has written to Union home minister Shivraj
Patil seeking his intervention in the matter. The Maharashtra
government has expressed its resentment about being kept in the dark
about Virk’s case by the Punjab government although more than a
month has passed since his arrest on September 9.
Politicians and officials in the Punjab government have expressed
ignorance about both the developments. Interestingly, it is learnt
that Sunday’s public meeting in Pune also carried anti-government
and anti-Sumedh Singh Saini (VB director) posters.
YC Pawar, a BJP
leader and former Jt commissioner (law and order) of Mumbai , who is
coming to Punjab after October 18, confirmed his plans. Pawar
clarified that he was coming in his personal capacity “to find out
whether Virk is being victimised by Punjab government”. He also
plans to meet the local BJP leaders and seek their views on the
subject. “In Maharashtra, Virk is known to be a very honest and
brave officer, so we want to find out what went wrong in Punjab,”
says this ex-cop who had once served with Virk in Pune. Though he is
not on an official party trip, some senior leaders in Maharashtra
BJP are learnt to have been informed about his plans.
Meanwhile, Patil’s letter to Shivraj Patil, written on October 11,
states that he was “surprised and shocked to hear from media re
ports and Shri Virk was arrested by the Pun jab police...although
this incident is report ed to have happened more than a month ago
the government of Maharashtra has received no communication from the
government of Punjab in this matter.” Patil reiterated that Virk was
a “very senior and highly decorated officer of the Indian police
service” and had put in 23 years of service in Punjab on the request
of the Punjab government. ‘‘It is in deed surprising that a state
government that found an officer so indispensable and useful that
his deputation was extended for a total period of 23 years, has now
suddenly turned upon him,” it states further. ‘‘I am further
surprised, pained and shocked that the gov ernment of Punjab has not
even had the cour tesy of informing the state government of
Maharashtra of the action taken against this senior most and most
decorated IPS officer,” it states further while adding that they are
completely dependent upon media reports.
