Here's how Punjab cops can pay
for a cup of tea
WSN Network
Gurdaspur:
In an extremely disturbing report that can jolt even the hardened
cynic, the media in Punjab has brougth out how police brutality has
become a routine affair in the state. Calling it “unprecedented”,
The Tribune newspaper reported how a few policemen tied a Dalit tea
vendor to a tree for hours together in the local police post, all
because the victim refused to supply them tea free of cost.
Though the
policemen, including munshi Yashpal Singh and Head Constable Amanual
Masih, have been placed under suspension and sent to the Police
Lines by the district police authorities, no case against them was
registered despite the fact that victim Ramesh Kumar was “illegally
confined and tortured” in the police post without any fault.
Ramesh, while
narrating his tale of woes before mediapersons, said that the
policemen forcibly took him to the police post. He was handcuffed
and tied to a tree. His fault was that he had refused to supply tea
free of cost to the policemen from his kiosk located near it. He
added that he was maltreated, abused and threatened by the policemen
that he would be implicated in a false criminal case as he had
refused to supply them tea free of cost.
It was an area
resident who took up the matter with an SP rank officer that brought
relief to the dalit man. (Adapted largely from a report cited in the
story - Ed.).
