Sant Bhindranwale's birth
anniversary observed

Fatehgarh
Sahib: Various panthic outfits in Punjab marked the 63rd birth
anniversary of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale with the ruling Akali
Dal and the SGPC maintaining distance and silence on the event,
something they have done for decades now. SAD (A) president
Simranjit Singh Mann said Bhindranwale laid his life for Sikhism.
“We now have the
right to speak for a separate state, Khalistan. It is not a crime to
speak about Khalistan or to distribute advertisement material
demanding a separate nation,” Mann said.Except for some dogged
efforts of Sikh intellectuals, the Punjab polity has been so
depoliticised that rational and engaged debate about the painful
past is completely missing from all dialogue and the only shrill
talk that is heard has to do with how to strengthen the Badal
family. Occasions like Sant Bhindranwale's birth anniversary that
could become legitimate discussion forums are strongly discouraged,
but panthic organizations have been keeping the flag flying in the
face of all odds.
