Mumbai victims are mourned

HAMILTON:
Hamilton's Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Jewish communities held a
candlelight memorial for victims of the Mumbai terror attack.
Co-sponsored by the
Hamilton
police, community members met on Sunday from
2
to 4 p.m.
at the Hindu Samaj Temple of Hamilton.
"This was our
9/11 in
India," Dr. Man Subramanian of the Hindu Samaj said. "This has
unified our community and now there is not the religious divide in
India anymore. We are hearing from the Muslim leaders in Mumbai that
terrorism has no legitimacy in any religion, and that is a very
positive message."
Subramanian said
the Hindu community was apprehensive about holding a memorial at its
temple. But because Hamiltonians stood with its Hindu community when
its temple was destroyed in the wake of
World Trade
Center attacks, "we now agreed to do this because people want to
relate."
Javid Mirza, of
Hamilton's Muslim community, said: "India is very sacred to my
heart, because although I was born in Pakistan, much of my family is
there."
Victims of the
Mumbai attack included Hindus, Sikhs, Jews and Christians, he said.
"These terrorists have no ethics, no morals ... they do not
represent humankind." For more information, call
Hamilton police
community relations co-ordinator Sandra Wilson at 905-546-4910.
