At Fremont Gurdwara, event focused
on college
education a big success
WSN Network
Fremont,
CA:.
Mission College Admission, an initiative aimed at helping the Sikh
children attain higher education and increase success rate has
brought to the community an awareness event titled “The Importance
of a College Education.” With the punch line that "College has
become the new high school,” Harpreet Kaur Sangha of Stanford
University and Harmeet Mann of UCLA interacted with close to 100
parents at the Fremont Gurdwara Sahib Trailer on the Sikh Education
Crisis and how we as a community can propel our children to academic
success.
Harpreet Sangha explained that the current educational outlook for
the Sikh community is bleak: a crisis is besetting our community.
Our Sikh children are not succeeding in their secondary-level
education and those who are graduating from high school are not
making it to college. Harpreet also explained how Sikh students can
gain a competitive edge in college admissions by taking honors/AP
classes and getting involved in research and the community.

Sukhi Chahal of
Milpitas
who attended along with his wife and daughter said that this is
first time in the Gurdwara Sahib Fremont history that a seminar of
this caliber has happened and was grateful for the joint efforts of
MCA and Fremont Gurdwara to provide such crucial information to the
Sikh community.
Jaspal Singh Saini, a Sikh scientist, commended Harpreet, Harmeet,
and Gurdwara management for organizing such a seminar. He said
recent immigrants including him didn’t know much about about the
education system in USA. Bhai Gurmeet Singh encouraged all Sikh
students to attend medical schools and spoke about his personal
experience of working hard to prepare his kids for college.
Bhai Harjot Singh Khalsa said that management has only two main
priorities: Religious programs and Educational initiatives. Harjot
further explained that Harpreet and Harmeet have been doing sewa by
providing free SAT tutoring for the last two months. He also
informed the audience of Fremont Gurdwara’s progress on setting up
Gurdwara scholarships for high school and college students.
Many participants gave positive feedback for the opportunity offered
to parents. In addition to learning about the admission process,
parents learned about monitoring the progress of their children and
the importance of keeping in touch with teachers. Based on the
feedback, similar seminars and SAT classes will be arranged in the
future.
